Plugged In, based in Needham, MA is an after school music program for students of all ages — elementary through high school. Plugged In is for kids who want to start a band, but who don’t know how to, have a place to practice or know people to play with. Each band of about 5 musicians is led by a teacher who facilitates a 90-minutes lesson. The bands choose a name and decide which songs they are going to play. Bands will even write and perform original music.
Plugged In offers private music lessons for students who are new to their instrument or who want to improve their skill. Private lessons can also enrich the musician’s art of the performing. In addition students can elect to take songwriting and recording workshops.
Plugged In not only creates a unique music learning environment, it teaches how to be part of a community, and how to band together to support local and global causes through their benefit concert series. The students present and choose a cause to support during their Community Engage Evening.
Plugged In is a place where students feel safe, will take risks and can develop self-confidence. So many young people have no outlet for their enthusiasm and creative energy. Plugged In bands provide a nurturing and supportive environment built on mutual respect and understanding. No matter what your musical interest or skill level, Plugged In has a place for you.
Plugged In is not only for Needham music students: we draw from neighboring communities such as Newton, Wellesley and Dedham, and even from Boston and Cambridge. Many students play instruments not widely included in a school community, such as guitar, keyboard or electric bass. These students now have a place to meet one another and play. Currently we have bands in the genres of Rock, Blues, Folk, Hip-Hop and Pop, but there’s always room for a new genre or musical experiment.
Plugged In is a welcoming inclusive program and works with families with special situations. In addition, some students benefit from becoming a mentor through a session. Please call to arrange a meeting with our directors.
